Closely connected to nature, Ayurveda recognizes that our body is a reflection of the five great elements, known as the Pancha Mahabhoota: Space (Aakash), Air (Vayu), Fire (Teja), Water (Jala), and Earth (Prithvi). These elements combine in different proportions to form the three doshas the vital energies that sustain life.
Vata Dosha is composed of air and space. It governs all forms of movement within the body from the beating of the heart and the circulation of blood to the movement of thoughts and nerve impulses. Vata also regulates sensory and motor functions and mental states such as anxiety, fear, and nervousness.
Pitta Dosha is made up of fire and water. It is responsible for digestion, metabolism, body temperature regulation and mental clarity. Pitta governs the transformation of food into energy and influences skin complexion. Emotionally, it is linked to qualities such as ambition, competitiveness, and at times, anger or jealousy.
Kapha Dosha consists of earth and water. It provides the body’s structure, lubrication, and immunity. Kapha brings stability, endurance, and strength while also governing emotions such as calmness, compassion, and attachment.
In Ayurveda, health is defined as the perfect balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. When these energies are in harmony, the body functions smoothly, and both physical and mental health flourish. However, disturbances in this balance due to diet, lifestyle, environment, or emotional factors can lead to disease.
Ayurveda philosophy is rooted in two guiding principles: Aturashya Vikar Prasamanam – curing diseases of the sick, and Swasthasya Swasthya Rakshanam – preserving the health of the healthy. The goal of Ayurveda is to restore and maintain this natural balance through wholesome food, mindful living, herbal remedies, yoga, meditation, and seasonal routines. By living in harmony with nature’s rhythms, Ayurveda empowers us to enjoy lasting vitality, emotional well-being, and a deeper connection to life.
