Vamana-Emesis

Vamana-Emesis

Vamana is one of the five principal purification therapies of Panchakarma in Ayurveda.

Vamana is one of the five principal purification therapies of Panchakarma in Ayurveda. It is a specialized therapeutic procedure designed to eliminate aggravated Kapha Dosha from the body through controlled therapeutic emesis (vomiting). By removing accumulated toxins (Ama) and excess Kapha from the upper gastrointestinal tract, Vamana helps restore the body's natural balance and promotes long-term health.

At Sukrutham Ayurveda Chikitsalayam, Vamana is performed only after a thorough Ayurvedic assessment and under the close supervision of experienced Ayurvedic physicians. Each treatment is individualized based on the patient's Prakriti (body constitution), Dosha imbalance, age, strength, and medical condition.
Indications

Vamana is beneficial for a wide range of Kapha-dominant disorders, including:
. Bronchial asthma (Tamaka Swasa)
. Chronic bronchitis
. Recurrent cough with excessive mucus
. Allergic rhinitis and sinusitis
. Frequent colds and nasal congestion
. Certain chronic skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne
. Obesity associated with Kapha imbalance
. Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol)
. Prediabetes and selected metabolic disorders
. Indigestion due to Kapha accumulation
. Chronic lethargy and heaviness
. Recurrent tonsillitis (in appropriate cases)

The suitability of Vamana is determined only after a detailed Ayurvedic consultation.

Contraindications
Vamana is not recommended in the following situations unless specifically advised by an experienced Ayurvedic physician:

. Pregnancy
. Lactation (except in selected supervised cases)
. Children and very elderly individuals with poor strength
. Severe debility or malnutrition
. Active gastrointestinal bleeding
. Severe uncontrolled hypertension

Procedure
1. Poorva Karma (Preparation)
The body is prepared for Vamana through Deepana-Pachana (digestive stimulation), internal oleation (Snehapana), external oil massage (Abhyanga), and steam therapy (Swedana). These preparatory procedures help loosen and mobilize aggravated Kapha and toxins, making the body ready for effective elimination.

2. Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)
On the treatment day, carefully selected herbal medicines are administered under the supervision of an Ayurvedic physician to induce controlled therapeutic emesis. The procedure is closely monitored to ensure safe and effective removal of excess Kapha from the body.

3. Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)
Following Vamana, a gradual diet plan (Samsarjana Krama), adequate rest, and personalized Ayurvedic medicines and lifestyle advice are recommended to restore digestive strength, support recovery, and maximize the long-term benefits of the therapy.
